Before arriving at UC Frank taught geology at the University of Illinois and spent summers with the Geology Field Camp in Wyoming and Montana. He continued to be involved with the field camp after joining UC and the students from both campuses were treated to his memorable field trips west. Frank prepared his own guidebooks, including all the hand-drafted figures. An example is below:
